Exeter College alumnus publishes comprehensive guide to English sayings

Exeter College alumnus, Mark Chatterton (Theology, 1976) has published his latest book, The Ultimate Book of English Sayings, Phrases & Idioms: Over 5000 entries with their meanings, an extensive reference work compiling over 5,000 English idiomatic expressions with detailed explanations of their origins and usage.

With the English language full of sayings which do not mean what they say. This can often be very confusing for those for whom English is not their first language. This book aims to help these people, as well as those on the autistic spectrum who can also be confused when a saying’s interpretation is not literally true. The author has spent several years collating over 5,000 sayings into one book, adding what the sayings mean.

In a recent interview with BBC Essex, Chatterton described the book as “a celebration of the quirky, fascinating expressions that shape our everyday speech.” He explained how many idioms carry surprising histories and reflect social changes over time, making them a lens into both language and society.

Chatterton’s passion for language is also evident on his website, where he shares ongoing projects and resources for those interested in idiomatic English. His work has been recognised in IQ magazine, published by Mensa UK, where his insights into language and intellect were featured.
